Russia’s increasing airstrikes benefit ISIS

Key Details:

30/09/2016 from Hong Kong

-Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told US Secretary of State John Kerry on Friday that Moscow is ready to increase the amount of air strikes in Syria since the constant violation of ceasefire agreement by Al-Qaeda.

-US condemned Russia’s attack as ‘barbarous’ and not necessary towards ISIS.

Assessment:

The increase of air strikes by Russia towards Syria does not mean more effective results against the terrorism in there. US described the air strikes launched by Russia in Syria as a ‘gift’ to the ISIS since it would plant seeds of vengeance and encourage more people to join ISIS. Also, the US has given Russia numerous times to handle Syria through a peace process instead of military manoeuvres but yet Moscow ignored and responded with more of them, including the increase in air strikes this time. This would undermine the relationship of counter-terrorism cooperation between US and Russia, making it more difficult and less effective to fight ISIS since they are destroying their common ground on the matter.
