Diyarbakir Explosions

Key details:

15/08/2016 from Turkey

  • An explosion rocked an area outside Turkey’s largest southeastern city of Diyarbakir on Monday, 15th August, security sources said.
  • Ambulances were rushed to the scene, Dogan said. The area where the explosion hit is on a road between Diyarbakir and the district of Bismil, about 50 kilometres (31 miles) east.
  • The incident happened at the same day of pkk’s anniversary (1984). The truck with explosives detonated in front of police station.
PKK attacked this building 8 years ago, too.
According to TR news, 3 police officers and a child died, 25 people wounded. According to The Japan Times, ”the local governor’s office earlier said in a statement that 25 people were wounded, including five police officers. One of those killed was a child.”
  • Previously, six police officers were killed Thursday, 31st March 2016 in an explosion caused by a bomb-laden car in the mainly Kurdish city of Diyarbakir, Turkish news agencies reported. The explosives detonated as a vehicle carrying special forces and riot police passed by.  A local official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because there had not been a formal announcement, said all the dead were members of the security forces.   The state-run Anadolu Agency reported six dead and 23 wounded, including nine civilians, in the attack near a bus terminal. It said a vehicle carrying special forces was caught in the blast.
The private Dogan news agency also reported six dead and 23 injured. It blamed “terrorists” for the incident, using the government designation for Kurdish rebels.
Turkey has been imposing curfews in several districts of the southeast since August to flush out militants linked to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK. The Kurdish rebels have set up barricades, dug trenches and planted explosives to keep security forces at bay.
The military operations have raised concerns over human rights violations and scores of civilian deaths. Tens of thousands of people have been displaced in the fighting.

Assessment: PKK

PKK established in Lice, Diyarbakir in 1978. So, Diyarbakir is important for the organization. This is why PKK choose Diyarbakir to carry out attacks. The group’s first attack happened in August 15, 1984 at Hakkari. PKK carries out most of its attacks in Southeastern Anatolia Region and Eastern Anatolia Region, Turkey. However, from 2010 to 2015 group practice attacks in Istanbul, Ankara etc.

The group targets especially security forces such as police, soldiers, gendermaries or village’s security. Also, civilians are targeted. Another strategy of group is that, stopping bus or cars and kill civilians. PKK uses explosives or guns to carry out its attacks. The group attacks police stations or villages especially. It also attacks, schools and public places.

When we look at the incidents, group become more savage, and total deaths proves that point.
